Wine sales – an exciting prospect indeed!  Not only is it a great time to pick up a bargain (and we all love a bargain – half price Cava?  Don’t mind if I do…) it’s an ideal opportunity to try something new and expand your wine drinking horizons with lighter investment.

If you love Pinot Grigio and other delicate white wines, try the Italian Tenuta Giglio Trebbiano or Forrest Pinot Gris from New Zealand.  Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape but in the hands of the kiwis you get an equally delicate and pleasurable wine but with just a bit more flavour and texture.  It’s delicious stuff and impossible not to like.   For white wine drinkers wanting a treat, seize the opportunity to pick up one of the extraordinarily good wines from Domaine Zind Humbrecht in Alsace.  Olivier Humbrecht makes white wines with real power and finesse that actually do repay some ageing.  These are really tasty wines with complexity, elegance, concentration, finesse, regionality and personality.  Top class stuff.

If you are interested in trying a real classic fine wine Ch Clos Fourtet 2004 from Bordeaux has 40% off and is a fantastic example of how good these wines can be and it’s right at the peak of its maturity now.  It’s soft, harmonious, complex and really satisfying.  Pour a little into a generously sized glass, swirl, sniff, sip and repeat to your hearts content on a cold, miserable night and enjoy every mouthful.

Dessert wines are often sadly neglected bottles of deliciousness – perhaps not so surprising as they’re not usually required on a weekly basis.  For some reason these wines seem to hold a lot of fear for people but are equally the wines that people are most excited by when they taste them – the proof of the pudding is in the tasting as it were.  These wines are not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but they are extremely good quality and very hard to make so well worth the money.  Buy a bottle ofRieussec or Climens, stick it in the wine rack and some time when you have some friends round for dinner, crack open a bottle with dessert or with cheese or keep it for Christmas.  You never know, you might find a new passion.
