What Wine should I pair with Nut Roast? #AskJN

Learn About Wine: Food & Wine |

      Tags:Christmas,Food & Wine Pairing,

If there’s a vegetarian around your Christmas table there is most likely a nut roast too. And even if you’re a carnivore it’s not be overlooked, it can be a great accompaniment to your meal; it complements the meat and vegetables nicely, rich in flavour and texture. But what to wash it down with?

Recipes for nut roast vary, but generally the main components are nuts and mushrooms. Keeping along the lines of the baked, toasty nuts, a rich white wine with a little oak should complement this perfectly. A white Burgundy should do the trick, like the Pouilly Fuisse from Domaine Manciat Poncet, with its pure fruit and gentle oak.

"The finest of this quartet is the 2011 Pouilly Fuisse Les Petites Bruyeres, which cuts a broader, more savory mouthfeel. Full-bodied with good minerality as well as lots of flesh and plenty of buttery citrus intermixed with tangerine oil, poached peach and white currant notes. This deep, concentrated Chardonnay should drink nicely for several more years. 92 pts." (eRobertParker.com, Dec 2012).

If you are feeling a red wine would be in order, then a Pinot Noir should work – those earthy, savoury notes will match well with the chestnut mushrooms, and it will most likely be on the table already, as Pinot is a Christmas dinner classic! Keep it Burgundian with Jean Fournier Bourgougne 2013.

New to JN Wine. Domaine Jean Fournier is situated in Marsannay-la-Côte. The estate has vineyards in AOC Marsannay, Fixin and Côte de Nuits. Jean Fournier takes great care of his vines and follows the rules of organic farming .The old vines on his plots give his wines great depth and flavour. Each wine has its own personality- a credit to the time and work that Fournier puts in.

This is a truly magnificent Pinot Noir; not just for the price - it's packed full of flavour! The wine is vibrant purple in colour with notes of red fruits on the nose, very juicy and ripe on the palate with slightly smokey nuances.
