      Cheese and wine...cheese with wine...

One of the highlights of the festive food calender is cheese and wine.

In 2015 we are privileged to have at the end of our knives a selection of cheese that our parents would never thought possible. With that comes the task of finding the right wine to complement.

We will try and keep it broad here with cheese types and alongside sweet and fortified wines we will suggest grape varieties you are likely have in your rack.

      Hard Cheese.

Think of a cheddar cheese stored in a cave in the west country for this bit or good quality gruyere. You can go red here. A fruity red will go well. Try a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon or this bottle from Bordeaux.

      Soft Cheese.

Camembert, brie, delice de bourgogne, or Ireland's very own Cavanbert.

One word. Chardonnay. If the cheese is really ripe you can go rich with the white.

      Remoissenet Givry Blanc 2011

      Bottle Price: £19.99 / €27.50 Case Bottle Price: £17.99 / €24.75

      Goats Cheese.

If you are a lover of goats cheese, it is possible to love it even more. Try some St Tola irish goats cheese with a glass of Loire Sauvignon Blanc. A match made in heaven.

      Blue Cheese.

Most wines will be overpowered by the acidity and saltiness in blue cheeses. Two types of wine work beautifully and can stand up. A sweet dessert wine or a port.
