Morisfarms

Situated in the southwest corner of Tuscany, this family-run organic farm produces super wines from the Sangiovese grape.  Tuscany’s most famous wines such as Chianti, Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and Vino Nobile de Montepulciano are all also made from various different strains of the Sangiovese grape which is ideally suited to their individual terroirs.  Scansano is the name of the village in this corner of Tuscany and here they call Sangiovese ‘Morellino’ hence the wines are called Morellino di Scansano.  The idea that Italian wines are complicated is not unfounded..

Due to the warmer climate and slightly higher elevation, Morellino di Scansano tends to be a little more concentrated and intensely flavoured than Chianti.  Sangiovese is typically associated with the flavour of red cherries and herbs.  It doesn’t have a lot of tannin, but its key characteristic is that it’s a savoury sort of grape rather than a purely sweet fruit grape.  This means it is one of the best food wines you can imagine.  Try one of these wines with any dish with a tomato and herb based sauce and your spaghetti bolognese will never be the same again.
