Roc de Cambes

Roc de Cambes is located in the Cotes de Bourg appellation, across the water from the more prestigious First Growth châteaux. It is the Domaine’s geographical location that provided inspiration for the name which is located in the commune of St.Laurent des Combes.

Francois Mitjavile of the famed, Tertre Roteboeuf in St.Emilion, purchased the vineyard in late 1987, at this point he renamed the new winery; Chateau Rod de Cambes.

He then went on to purchase the entire 14-hectare estate one year later. The estate required extensive replanting and, Domaine renovation and cellar modernisation.

1998 was the debut vintage for Domaine Roc de Cambes.  That name was shortened to Roc de Cambes in 1994.

The vineyard is situated not far from the Bordeaux city centre and it is also less than 30 KM due south of St. Emilion.

The 12.5-hectare vineyard of Roc de Cambes is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The terroir is mostly limestone and clay soils, similar to what you find in the Right Bank of Bordeaux, especially in Saint Emilion.

François' philosophy involves an instinct and understanding of the rhythms of the vineyard.  The vine age on average is around 40 years old.

Roc de Cambes is vinified in traditional concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels.

The wine is then aged in an average of 50% new, French oak barrels for between 18 to 24 months before bottling.

Roc de Cambes produces rich, stylish, full-bodied wines that considering their size are remarkably balanced and well composed.

They also produce Domaine de Cambes, which is not considered a second wine, as it comes from a different terroir and grape source.

Domaine de Cambes is not in the boundaries of the Cotes de Bourg appellation.

The vines are much further down the slopes and they are closer to the Gironde, creating a cooler terroir with more clay in the soils as well.

The resulting wines showcase the finesse the estate is known for yet provide more immediate drinking pleasure.

The Côtes de Bourg appellation has enormous potential, but it is frequently underutilised and represented.

Thanks to François's highly unique working style, his wines easily rank among Bordeaux's best wines that offer an unparalleled price vs. quality ratio.

For this reason they have quickly risen to become one of Bordeaux’s hidden gems, a true insiders tip!

“Same stable as Tertre-Rôteboeuf in St-Emilion. Forget that it's from Côtes de Bourg - this is a grand vin! Overseen and vinified by the meticulous, eccentric and inspiring François Mitjavile. These wines are opulent and rich but with a serious structure as well. Rounded tannins provide a smooth, creamy texture while the limestone terroir and Cabernet Sauvignon give character and freshness. (Decanter Magazine, April 2015)
