Dr. Loosen

Family-owned for over 200 years, the winery has been managed by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988. Great wines, he believes, are the perfect expression of soil, climate and grape variety. With the heritage of his ancestors - old vines, true to their roots, in historic Grand Cru sites of the Middle Mosel – he found exactly the material he needed to produce independent, complex wines of world class. Today applies Dr. Loosen internationally as the figurehead for a rediscovered German Riesling culture. Since 1993, the winery has been a member of the VDP (Association of German Quality Wineries).

When Ernst ‘Erni’ Loosen took over his family ‘s winery, he had already made numerous trips to the world’s most prestigious vineyards. He wanted to discover the secret of truly great wines in order to make world-class wines himself. These journeys of discovery inspired Erni’s own philosophy: great wines are an authentic expression of the soil, the climate and the vines themselves.

Erni explains:

‘When I drink a wine from a Grosse Lage (grand cru) site, such as Wehlener Sonnenuhr, I want to smell the blue slate that nourished the grapes and taste the depth of the old vines. I want to experience the special character of a vintage and enjoy it as it evolves over many years. That ability to transmit a visceral connection to a people, place and time is what sets wine apart from any other beverage.’

Dr Loosen wines are characterized by the Mosel Valley’s Cool climate and distinctive slate soils, as well as some very old, ungrafted vines.

The Mosel region’s generally cool climate, its steep, south-facing slopes, and the moderating effect of the river create ideal conditions for Riesling. The southerly exposure guarantees sunlight from morning to evening, while the steepness provides a more direct inclination of sunlight at our northern latitude. These conditions create a long growing season, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their refreshing acidity.

The stony slate soil, which can be seen on the surface of the vineyard, reflects sunlight to the grapes during the day while retaining heat throughout the cool nights. The slate has a high content of potassium and other minerals, making it a rich, natural source of nutrients for the vines. Thin, rocky topsoil forces the vines to dig deep for water, producing vibrant wines that capture the lively and distinctive mineral character of the soil.

Due to the very stony, well-drained soils, a large part of the Mosel region is still free from phylloxera. In its best sites, Dr. Loosen has vines that are up to 130 years old, on original rootstock. Old vines are less vigorous and produce wines that are naturally more concentrated and expressive of their terroir.

The Wines

Graacher Riesling Dry

The Graacher Riesling comes from younger vines in the Graacher Himmelreich.

Since the grapes come from a Grosse Lage, the wine could also have been bottled as a GG. However, they have decided that they produce GGs only from plots that are over 100 years old.

These younger vines are only 15-20 years old. Accordingly, they decided to declassify the wine to a Village Riesling, even though its power and complexity are already amazingly close to GG quality.

A powerful, yet very elegant Riesling, to which the weathered blue slate soil lends its freshness and elegance.

Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett

Bright red and frighteningly steep, the Ürziger Würzgarten forms an amphitheater of Rotliegend unique to the Mosel.

Here grow the grapes for great Rieslings with exotic spicy aromas and great depth.

In some years, you can taste anise and even a hint of Gewürztraminer.

The oldest vines of their winery grow in the Ürziger Würzgarten.

Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese

This vineyard is adjacent to the Prälat vineyard and is so steep that centuries ago stone steps were built into the hillside to help workers reach the vines.

The iron-rich, red slate soil produces wines that are rich, racy and complex, with an intense mineral aftertaste.
