Edetària

Edetària Celler hail from the Terra Alta DO in the extreme south of Catalunya.

Located some 50km from Priorat, here vineyards lie at around 400m of altitude with ideal soils incorporating limestone and good drainage.

Increasingly the region is being recognised for its potential to produce ‘Garnatxa’-based wines of equal quality to its more famous neighbours in the north.

Edetària is named after the ‘Via Edetana’, the old Roman trade route from Torotosa to Zaragoza that passed through the estate. All the wines come from Edetaria’s own vineyards of which there are around 60 hectares with vines mostly over 50 years old.

The vineyards have a diverse range of soils, from terraces composed of limestone and clay to old riverbeds where cobbles dominate. A state-of-the-art cellar was built in 2003 to assist Edetària in their making of clean, modern wines that crest the new wave of winemaking creativity to be found in Terra Alta.

Team Biography

Joan Àngel Lliberia, the estate’s founder, started Edetària’s adventure after studying Agricultural Engineering in Lleida and taking a Master of Science in Wine Management at OIV.

He first worked for several wine companies in France before moving back to Catalunya, where he continued his career in the wine sector and later in multinational corporations.

It was his childhood, spent lived amongst a universe of vineyards, grapes and cellars, and his undying passion for wine, that called him back to his origins to set up Edetària.

A dream come true, a homage to his grandfather Llorens – an oenologist - and his parents Pepita and Angel – viticulturists - making true terroir wines out of his family vineyards in a genuine style.

In the vineyard

Edetària is located in Gandesa, the central area of Terra Alta - currently the second largest vineyard area in Catalunya in which one third of all Garnatxa Blanca worldwide is grown.

Edetària only produces wine from its own estate vineyards, allowing them to control the vitivinicultural process right from the start. A significant part of these vineyards is aged between 60-100 years old, imparting a distinct old-vine complexity to the wines, and yields are always kept low to maintain a high quality must.

Edetària’s vineyards are planted in five different terroirs, each contributing its own personality:

- ‘Panal’, a fossilised sand dune soils from the Quaternary period.

- ‘Tapàs’, silty soils with clay.

- ‘Tapàs blanc’, shallow soils with calcareous marl.

- ‘Còdols’, old riverbed with surface pebbles.

- ‘Vall’, fertile, lime-rich, deep soils.

Edetària focus mostly on indigenous grape varieties cultivated using Massal Selection and cuttings of Terra Alta Garnatxa Blanca, Garnatxa Fina, Garnatxa Peluda and Carinyena phenotypes.

Sustainable practices to achieve the purest and the most genuine expression from their vineyards has always been Edetària’s way, and this includes:

- Preserving soil structure and oxygenating it by rotating till and no-till cover crops.

- Using green fertilizers (pruning remains, cover crops cuts) and manure.

- Complete avoidance of using chemical fungicides and insecticides.

- Experimental Vineyard Irrigation project at Finca la Serra d’Edetària with Incavi (Catalan Institute of Wine) for more efficient use of irrigation.

- CCPAE organic certified.

- Use of solar energy in the cellar.

- Active members of Terres de l’Ebre Reserva de la Biosfera, whose aim is to put in value to agricultural, environmental, natural scenery and cultural resources, while developing agricultural and touristic activities in the region.

In the cellar

Edetària’s winery was built in 2003, surrounded by a part of Lliberia family vineyards.

After a rigorous manual harvest, grapes are stored in small boxes and cooled down to 0-5°C before finally a second triage at the sorting table is made. By doing so, only those grapes with the right polyphenolic ripeness find their way into the vats.

Winemaking vats are of small sizes - all of them designed and equipped to vinify each plot separately. Concerning maturation: it is Edetària’s goal to preserve and enhance the nuances and character of every single vineyard and this includes working shoulder to shoulder with specific coopers to select those barrels that better suit the expression of Edetària wines.
