Rocca delle Macìe

The history and philosophy of Rocca delle Macìe are inextricably linked to the union and importance of the Zingarelli family. Their dedication and passion, for the land and for wine have been handed down from father to son and continue to be nurtured for the next generations.

Today, it is a modern and innovative estate on the outside, but with a family spirit and hospitality. Attentive to the latest technology when it comes to production, but reliant on characters in whom the family places the greatest trust, people who have been at Rocca forever or have received precious and irreplaceable knowledge from previous generations.

The family export wine all over the world, aiming to tell the story of a unique territory, and a grape, Sangiovese, that represents absolute excellence in the field of oenology and agronomy.

At Rocca delle Macìe, cinema and wine are inseparable. Italo Zingarelli, a film producer, has given Italians numerous successful films. In 1973 Italo brought a 14th century hamlet near Castellina in Chianti and carried out careful architectural restorations, to create Rocca delle Macìe with his wife Laura.

Sergio Zingarelli, the chairman, started working with his father in 1985. He took over the helm in1989 and moved permanently to Castellina in Chianti. With the help of his wife, siblings and now the third generation, Sergio has been devoted to the development of his father’s estate, bringing it to the attention of the world at large.

In the 1990 Sergio decided to bring a new era of wine growing with the objective of obtaining grapes of the highest quality and embarking on an oenological process aiming for excellence in both grapes and wines. And so, the ‘Global Quality’ programme began.

Rocca believe a wine should not only be ‘good to drink’ but also ‘good to think’ and therefore talk about. It must be perceived as an emotion, a ‘wine landscape’ able to bring to life what is outside the glass. The wines are made with a careful eye on environmental sustainability, aiming to reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources.

Today Rocca delle Macìe consists of 6 estates; Le Macìe, Sant’Alfonso, Fizzano, Le Tavolelle, Campo Maccione and Casamaria (the newest addition in 2003), covering 600 hectares.

Sergio’s children Giulia and Andrea were born and bred in Rocca delle Macìe and have been passionately involved for some years now. Giulia is the link between Rocca and the Fizzano Estate where the Relais and the restaurant are located.

Andrea supports his father in general management of the estate on a daily basis. Sergio’s nephew Fabio is a key member, and plays a role in managing film rights but looks after some commercial aspects as well.

The Zingarelli family value hospitality and have had open doors since the inception of Rocca delle Macìe, offering a privileged opportunity to immerse oneself in the life and soul of Tuscan wine growing and production. In addition to the historic cellars, numerous tasting experiences are offered at le Macìe.

The Fizzano Estate, a medieval hamlet dating to the 11th century, is a holiday retreat offering scenic views of some of the finest vineyards. The Realis consists of 19 flats, a swimming pool, gardens, a chapel and a restaurant. A beautiful base camp for exploring the area.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary celebrations of They Call Me Trinity (a hit 1970s spaghetti western produced by Italo) the “Trinity Gallery” was opened inside the winery, becoming the first and only Italian Cinematic Winery dedicated to its very own world and bearing witness to an “epic” that has never faded away.
