Salwey

Weingut Salwey is located in the southwest of Germany. It is the sunniest region of the country. They produce dry white and red wines in the heart of the so-called Kaiserstuhl, an extinguished volcanic belt. The family’s viticultural roots reach back to the 18th century. But under the name Salwey, the winery is operating by the third generation of Salwey.

The Family

Heinrich Nepomuk Steiert (1880-1967)

As early as in the 1920’s, the wines by Heinrich Nepomuk Steiert were standing for highest standards. He was also one of the founders of the Association of German Natural Wine Auctions – the forerunner of today’s VDP.

Anneliese und Benno Salwey

His daughter Anneliese (1916-2000) married Benno Salwey (1912-1976) After World War II they resettled in Kaiserstuhl. Together, they ran her family’s farm with a mixed focus on agriculture and wine.

Wolf-Dietrich Salwey (1941-2011)

Their son, Wolf-Dietrich Salwey, exponded the production of wines and distillates. Thanks to his efforts and vision, he brought back the image of Baden as Germany’s top region for Burgundy wines, in particular Pinot Noir.

Moreover, he was an active supporter of the VDP.Baden, leading Salwey winery to become the first member of its region.

Konrad Salwey

Konrad Salwey is Wolf-Dietrich’s oldest son. He is now following the family path, finding his own ways.

After learning at various German wine estates, among others Hans Wirsching and Müller-Catoir, he completed his oenology studies at the University of Geisenheim.

In 2002, Konrad returned to his family’s business in Oberrotweil.

Since 2011, Konrad manages the winery and is therefore shaping its strategic direction and wine development.

He is well-known for trying new ways of vinification, always refining Salwey’s pure style of wine.

The vineyard

The 35ha-vineyards are surrounded by the Alsatian Vosges Mountains in the west and the Black Forest Mountains in the east. The climate is strongly influenced by the Rhine valley and warm winds from Burgundy. Approximately 1800 hours of sun a year, adequate rainfalls and winds create a pleasant Mediterranean weather. This makes the Kaiserstuhl home to rare species like green lizards, bee-eaters, cactus and figs.

13-15 Million years ago, the soil has been influenced by eruptions, movements of tectonic plates (Rheingraben) and sand storms coming all the way from Africa. Today, remnants of this past like different lava, magma, volcanic stones and loess create a unique soil mineralization and terroir composition. This gives each wine its very own character.

The Cellar

Salwey make exclusively dry and completely fermented wines. Their style is clear, straightforward and is only characterized by the different variety of grapes and the minerality of each terroir. Most of their wines age in well-selected wooden barrels and barriques made of Kaiserstuhl oak and develop in their mountain cellar.

The cellar in Oberrotweil is Salwey’s pride and joy. Konrad’s dad Wolf-Dietrich built the cellar into the mountain in 1997. The 35-meter-long main tunnel as well as the 25-meter-long side tunnel create a perfect aging environment for our wines. Between 4 to 12 meters under earth, the cellar has a constantly cool temperature of 11,5° to 13° Celsius all year around. Furthermore, a built-in sprinkler system is controlling the air humidity. This supports especially the reds.

Their Motto: As little as possible, as much as necessary
