Winter is sneaking up on us and as the temperatures drop, evenings by the fireside at home become ever more appealing. What could be a better accomapiment to such an evening than a glass or two of wine?
For me, Winter evenings require a full bodied wine with heaps of flavour and texture. These are the kinds of wines many of us automatically turn to in winter. They go beautifully with the hearty meals that warm us up and are perfectly suited to long evenings by the fire. Wines to be savoured.
The ideal reds have plenty of dark berry fruit flavours; often accompaniesd by a touch of spice and some warming vanilla notes. An ideal match for Winter meals such as Beef Bourgiginon, or a hearty tomato pasta bake.
White wines can evoke the same comforts as the most opulent reds. Pick a full bodied white with deep fruit flavours and an added toasty or creamy dimension that will allow you to pair it with anything from creamy sauces to herby roast chicken or pork. Many of the foods hitting our plates this time of year are actually better paired with whites than reds.
