Beaucastel is a magical 110 hectare estate nestled in the hills to the north of the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. It remains in the ownership of the Perrin family who consistently make benchmark Châteauneuf. The ancient vines are grown in the typical “gobelet” style on the distinctive terroir which is laden with large round pebbles (galets). They famously grow all of the thirteen different grape varieties permitted within the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation.

Every vintage has its own unique character but in recent years there has been a tendency towards a more elegant style of winemaking, albeit retaining the legendary longevity the Beaucastel wines enjoy.

Château de Beaucastel red 2015

£225 / 250€ (6btl case)

The 2015 Beaucastel Rouge is a pleasure to taste. The juicy, silky, fruity core moves seamlessly into a darker, spicier fruit character likely coming from the late ripening Mourvèdre which makes up 30% of the blend and has performed particularly well in 2015. It gives structure, cool fruit, aromas of herbes de Provence, and some fine peppery tannins. The rich, sweetly fruited Grenache adds fleshy depth. Combined with the other varieties (Syrah, Cinsault, Counoise, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Vaccarèse) this wine has a meaty depth and persistence. There is fabulous elegance, purity and impressive freshness of fruit, which makes this wine not only vibrant on the palate but also means that you simply don’t taste the alcohol. The finish is long and utterly delicious. Drink 2020 – 2034

Coudoulet de Beaucastel, Cotes du Rhone Red 2015

£140 / 154€ (12btl case)

The 30 hectare Coudoulet vineyard lies just east of Beaucastel. Like Beaucastel, it owes its ability to age to the high proportion of Mourvedre which makes up 30% of the blend. The other main component is the Grenache which lends fullness and intense fruit to the wine. 2015 is a fabulous vintage for Coudoulet, which is often referred to as “Baby Beaucastel”. The nose is fresh and complex with notes of spice and liquorice. The palate is round and subtly balanced between a beautiful freshness and notes of black fruit. Drink 2018 – 25.
