Although it dates back to 1776, the Boekenhoutskloof estate was restored by its present owners in 1993 and since then the wines have become some of the most sought after, not only in terms of South Africa but throughout the wine world. It was awarded Winery of the Year in John Platter’s influential guide of 2012 and frequently achieves 5 star status for the wines. Winemaker and genius Marc Kent is the man who has steered the winery to the reputation it holds today.

JNWine have had the pleasure of representing Boekenhoutskloof in the Irish market for the past decade. Our annual offer always sells out (frequently to the same BHK fanatics it should be said!) Last year the Porseleinberg Syrah made its debut to great critical aclaim. It, too, sold out within the week so we urged the winery to give us a bigger allocation this year and I am delighted to say they agreed!

Vineyard: the Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon, containing 6% Cabernet Franc, was sourced from four individual parcels adjacent to one another on a south westerly aspect of the Franschhoek valley. Soil: sandy loam over granite bedrock.

Winemaker’s Comments: Grapes were picked by hand into small boxes, hand sorted and gently destalked. The grapes underwent a cold maceration in traditional concrete vessels and then fermented at temperatures between 27° and 30°C with frequent pump-overs to extract aromas, colour and tannins. After alcoholic fermentation a prolonged malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in 225 litre barriques. The wine was matured in French oak from our preferred coopers, Sylvain and Saury.

Tasting Notes: The nose entices with red stone fruit and cassis abound. The palate shows richness, texture and a youthful elegance with blackcurrant, spicy tobacco and hints of sweet Cape “fynbos” (shrub). Refined, well integrated tannins and a certain tension on the mid-palate suggest significant ageing potential.

Now firmly established as one of the world’s top Syrahs, Boekenhoutskloof rarely disappoints. The Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is sourced from three different sites. They acquired two new properties in the Swartland (Porseleinberg and Goldmine) a few years ago for its unique terroir of rocky bedrock and decomposed mica schist soils. These vineyards contribute to a substantial amount of the current bottling, although the original Wellington vineyard still contributes roughly 40% of our Syrah.

Winemaker’s comments: The fruit from each site is vinified separately as each parcel shows distinctive and individual characteristics. The grapes are partially de-stemmed and ferment spontaneously in concrete tanks with a soft délestage 2-3 times a day. Once cuvaison has been completed, the wine is moved to large traditional 2 500L foudres and 600L demi-muids for further ageing for up to 18 months, depending on the vintage.

Tasting Notes: The nose offers cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves with an abundance of dark plums and violets with hints of white pepper and dark chocolate. The attack on the palate is rich, generous and intense with the sweet spices and dark berry fruit following through. The wine is exceptionally smooth and balanced with perfectly integrated acidity and mouth-filling, svelte tannins adding to the fine structure. Long persistent finish.

The Porseleinberg vineyard in Swartland has been owned by Boekenhoutskloof since 2009 and is planted in Syrah. It has been found to produce a very particular Syrah with wonderful freshness, spiciness and structure that endows it with great longevity. So impressed have the Boekenhoutskloof team been with the wine that they decided to make a single vineyard wine – hence Porseleinberg. The winemaker, Callie Louw, farms the 18-year-old Syrah vines both organically and biodynamically. Wholebunch fermentation with natural yeasts and very little sulfur addition is followed by ageing in concrete eggs and foudres. The resulting wine is generally regarded as one of Swartland's finest.

Tasting note: The lively, expressive fruit is both rich and fresh. The medium-bodied palate is enlivened with just the right amount of acidity. Plenty of raspberry fruit underlain with spice and treacly depth contribute to this South African gem.

“This is loaded with layers of warm boysenberry, raspberry and blackberry confiture, stretching out over a well-embedded iron note and picking up anise, violet and juniper details along the way. Dense, lithe and seriously long. Impressive…Best from 2017 through 2025”. – Wine Spectator, 95 points

We also welcome back this year the beautiful Semillon from Boekenhoutskloof, the 2014 vintage. The grapes are sourced from what is claimed to be the oldest operating vineyard in South Africa. After being hand harvested the grapes are left to ferment in their own time, a slow, gentle process bringing out the best fruit character of the Semillon. This vintage has been blended with a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc, providing freshness and acidity. Finally aged and allowed to harmonise in a mixture of oak barriques and the ever-trendy concrete eggs for 14 months.

Chief wine-maker at Boekenhoutskloof, Mark Kent: The nose shows a melange of freshly squeezed citrus, pear, orange blossom, lemon curd and honeysuckle. The bright yellow fruit follows through onto a vibrant yet elegant palate with a richly textured mineral core, a firm structure and soft, balanced acidity. The use of French oak is evident from the hints of vanilla and almonds which lifts the palate in such a subtle way. The wine has a long, dry, nutty, spicy finish with peach blossoms and hints of marzipan lingering in the mouth.
