During a tasting with visiting vigneron Simon Barlow last year, we got the first hints that great things were on the horizon. Neal Martin, star reviewer from Robert Parker’s cohort had met with his son Murray for a tasting and they were just waiting to see the scores.

Rustenberg Peter Barlow 2009

"The 2009 Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the oldest vines on the property, two years in oak of which 70% is new, receiving an extended amount of time in bottle. It has a very intense bouquet, almost over-powering at first, with bright blackberry, fig jam, fresh dates and allspice aromas soaring from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. This is a thickly textured Cabernet, almost honeyed, with powerful fruit on the peacock's tail finish. It will need 4-6 years in bottle before it settles down, though there is great potential.” 93 points, Neal Martin for erobertparker.com, November 2015.
Rustenberg Five Soldiers 2012
Five Soldiers Chardonnay 2012 75cl £25.95 / €35.95
“The 2012 Five Soldiers Chardonnay comes from some of the oldest vines on the property, around 22 years old that tend to suffer a lot of coulure that lower yields, whole-bunch pressed with slightly more new wood (70%) for 15 months. The bouquet handles the wood well, with attractive dried honey and candle wax aromas complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity and frankly you would hardly notice the oak. Citrus fresh with delicate white peach and pink grapefruit notes, this is a lovely Chardonnay” 93 points, Neal Martin for erobertparker.com, November 2015.
