Château Pontet-Canet

The heart of the Pontet-Canet terroir, the “Plateau”, a ridge of Garonne gravel from Günz, rests on a limestone base. This lean, well-drained soil is renowned for being suitable for the character of the great Cabernet Sauvignon , a grape variety that accounts for more than 60% of the great wine.

Some plots at the top of the hill were planted in the late 1940s; these old vines, planted deep, produce the most beautiful grapes.

There are plenty of them; the average age of the vineyard is 50 years.

The other part of the vineyard is located near the river, not far from the village of Pouyalet, a much more calcareous area.

On some plots, the limestone outcrops, on others, the clay rises to the surface.

These cooler, richer soils are suitable for Merlot and produce more structured and fleshy wines.

In order to reconnect with the past, four plots located on the edge of the ridge have been planted with Petit Verdot , which brings spicy aromas to the great Pontet-Canet wine.

About half of the production is aged in new barrels, 10 to 15% in “one-wine” barrels and, since 2012, 30 to 40% in Dolia (concrete amphorae).

This orientation was born from a desire to produce wines stripped of all artifice.

The essence more than the make-up.

The duration of the aging varies from 16 to 18 months depending on the nature of the wines.
