Herdade do Sobroso

Located in a pretty little Alentejo town, set amongst the vast golden plains, cork trees, olive trees and vineyards, Herdade do Sobroso is set into this unique landscape that is replete with historical reminiscences and heritage. Now strongly influenced by its proximity to the largest artificial lake in Europe, the Alqueva Dam.

Sofia Ginestal Machado and Filipe Teixeira Pinto were still Zootechny and Oenology students when, Sofia's father, architect António Ginestal Machado, decided to acquire the property.

The future path of the young couple was clearly set at an early stage as together they developed the project - Herdade do Sobroso Wine & Country House. This project has bonded wine production, in one of the most extensive vineyards in all Alentejo, with the prospective of a space of architectural quality, to become a dynamic component in the region.

Herdade do Sobroso arose from a love of Alentejo, from a deep-rooted connection "to the Land", from a passion for wine and from a strong desire to create something to "leave" to future generations.

In the Vineyards

Located in a Single Terroir, next to Guadiana River banks, DOC region of Vidigueira, the predominant red grape varieties are Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro and Petit Verdot, while the white wines come from Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho and Perrum varieties.

The Sobro forest is one of the most diverse eco-systems in the world. With the name Sobroso Filipe and Sofia wished to pay tribute to the tree that is intertwined with the history of Alentejo.

In recent years 660 000 cork trees have been planted at Herdade do Sobroso.

A tribute to more than 2000 years of history and tradition of wine producing on the banks of the River Guadiana. The Romans, who introduced the vine into the DOC Vidigueira region, where Herdade do Sobroso is situated, called it "River of the Ducks" (Rio dos Patos).
