Valentin Leflaive

The Valentin Leflaive story has its roots in the history of the Leflaive family in Puligny-Montrachet, which has been guided for several centuries by a love for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and the search for precision in the expression of Burgundy terroirs.

Daring to take risks has become the hallmark of Olivier Leflaive. Since 2015, a new chapter has been written in Oger, at the heart of the great terroirs of the Côte des Blancs, that of a Champagne de Lieux. Olivier chose the first name of his son Valentin, born in 2007, for this new, fresh and slightly offbeat project.

In the Vineyards

Valentin Leflaive Champagnes look to the origin of the place, from the most fragmentary to the most generic. It is a philosophy that begins when working in the vineyard where the search for the nuances of the terroirs guides the team’s every step. Then, it is in the human-scale winery with a multitude of small vats, that the identity of each terroir is revealed with tailor-made vinification for each plot.

In the Winery

The experience of Grands Crus is felt in the method but also in the character. Élysé Brigandat seeks to capture balance from the start of vinification. Precision work on the outline, where tension and minerality draw the contours of Valentin Leflaive Champagne de Lieux. Ageing on lees in vats or Burgundy barrels, which have been used to age the Grands Crus of Puligny-Montrachet from Maison Olivier Leflaive, helps to reveal all the complexity of the Champagne.

Breaking down the label

With the name Leflaive, the Champagnes can only take one direction, that of an authentic sparkling wine to reveal the best of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Quality work and trust with the winegrowers are the basis of this quest for transparency where all the cards are laid on the table from the harvest. With minimal intervention in the cellar, Valentin Leflaive Champagnes do not cheat. They reflect their origin with the common thread being transparency displayed in the code.

The labels are a code in which the colour indicates the grape variety, the letters express the terroir, and the numbers indicate the base-wine years and the dosage. This modern approach affirms Valentin Leflaive’s determination to lay its cards on the table and play on transparency.
